During the early 1950s, the Schaumburg Township was a rural farming community with a population just over 1,000. By 1959, the population expanded to 8,000 residents and the Village of Hoffman Estates was incorporated with just three square miles. With the opening of the Northwest Tollway in 1958 and the annexation of 2,000 acres by 1962, Hoffman Estates had double its incorporated land area. Woodfield Mall opened in 1971 making the area a major business center. The economic development of Hoffman Estates expanded in the 1990s with the construction of the Prairie Scott Business Park.
